Playing their way to three wins, Escalon’s JV volleyball girls dispatched Enochs, Central Catholic and Ripon Christian in pre-season play.

They were 25-18, 19-25, 18-16 winners over Enochs at home to start the week on Sept. 10.

“Then we played Central Catholic on Wednesday and beat them,” coach Stephanie Williamson said of the 25-20, 17-25, 15-11 decision. Thursday, they swept Ripon Christian in 25-20, 25-22 fashion.

“We went to the Oakdale Invitational on Saturday and we won three games and lost two,” Williamson said. “We beat Merced, Beyer and Kimball, lost to Pitman and Bret Harte.”

The JV team is showing some good solid defensive work in the early going, added the coach, now it’s time for the offense to catch up.

The freshmen had a solid outing in the Golden Valley Tournament on Saturday, taking first in their pool with wins over Johansen (25-10, 25-23), Hoover (25-23, 29-27) and Golden Valley (25-20, 25-21).

“I wasn’t expecting that,” coach Krystal Rodriguez admitted of the stellar pool play. “That put us in the gold division and our first game, against Ripon, we beat them, then Enochs beat us but we ended up taking second in the tournament.”

Earlier in the week, the freshmen won in three games against Central Catholic and took down Ripon Christian in two.

“We have 13 girls and two are club players, everyone else is pretty much a novice,” Rodriguez explained. “Some played at El Portal but most of them, this is the first time they have touched a volleyball.

“The first couple of weeks were really rocky, but now they have started to click.”
