The Escalon boys cross country team is still racking up some great performances.
“After coming back from a long weekend of training the teams jumped right back into competing at the Escalon High cross country invite held at Woodward Reservoir on Wednesday,” said head coach Rick Heflin. “This year marked the 29th time Escalon has hosted the meet at Woodward. We had a new course this year which was fun and challenging.”
There were 15 teams competing at the meet. The frosh boys took second as a team with Josh Corrales leading the way. Braiden Vega, top finisher for Escalon in the sophomore competition, is improving each race and topped the team effort, taking third in the race.
Corrales was seventh overall for the freshmen, running the course in 10:38. Vega ran the course in 10:37 to pace the sophomore effort.
“The JV boys had a stellar performance in taking first with a second place individual effort by Jayden Lopez,” Heflin said, with Lopez running the longer course in 19:30.
The varsity boys took top honors, finishing first overall among competing teams with Gabe Romero leading the way. He was fourth overall, running the course in 17:59. Sam Fletcher was seventh overall, 18:27 and Rex Robbins was 10th in 18:14.
“On the girls side, personal records were the tune for the day,” Heflin said. “Jackie Lau is still our top girl but Tess Bedell raced her record time (14:54), coming in 16th place in the sophomore girls race. She opted to go up in division to run with our only sophomore Brittany Gonzalez, who also set a personal record.”
Gonzalez finished the course in 16:01.
Lau paced the varsity girls effort on the course, running it in 23:49 and taking 12th place overall honors.
The cross country team was able to take a break this past weekend and now are in the midst of a solid week of training before heading next weekend to Folsom to see how well they race on the section course.
“This Wednesday (Oct. 11) is our traditional run to Riverbank so cheer for the team if you see them running that way,” Heflin added.
