Notching their first Trans-Valley League win of the season this past week, Escalon’s varsity soccer girls took down Hughson in a game on the road.

The Wednesday, Jan. 15 contest saw the Lady Cougars put in four goals while holding the host Lady Huskies to just one tally.

“Natalie Cortes had three assists, Georgina Gallo had one goal, unassisted,” said head coach Jamie Peoples. “Mya Beary had two goals, Karla Cordova had one goal.”

The victory came after a tough first week of TVL play, as Escalon lost to Ripon on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and Livingston on Thursday, Jan. 9.

They got the win against Hughson but then took another loss, 3-1, to visiting Hilmar on Friday, Jan. 17.

“Natalie Cortes had the goal, she normally plays defense but she is playing right now wherever we need her,” said Peoples.

Assistant coaches for the team this season are Kaity French and Arnaldo Silva.

The varsity girls are now 1-3 in league play and 5-9-2 overall, with four wins coming during the preseason schedule.

They are scheduled to host Riverbank in Thursday afternoon action, Jan. 23, at EHS. The varsity played Hilmar on the JV field this past Friday, as it was in better shape than the varsity pitch after the rainy weather on Thursday.

The JV girls, meanwhile, have also put together a 1-3 start to league play, getting their win by a 1-0 decision over Livingston. They have been shut out in their league losses, 6-0 by Ripon; 3-0 to Hughson; 1-0 to Hilmar. Lexi Wheeler returns as head coach for the JV girls this season. They do not have a game this week, as Riverbank doesn’t field a JV soccer squad.
