After starting off the week on a high note, shutting out Riverbank on Tuesday, the varsity soccer girls fell behind, came back, then lost on a late penalty to Hughson in Thursday action, March 20.
They were home to host Riverbank on March 18 and had no trouble putting away the visiting Lady Bruins, 8-0.
"It was just a match we dominated from start to finish," said coach Craig Humrichouse. "Riverbank doesn't have a JV team, they're getting different coaches every couple of years ... they don't have the continuity."
That translates into a tough season likely ahead for the Bruins, but gave Escalon a chance to get plenty of players in the game.
"Amanda Franklin had four goals and two assists, Esmeralda Gomez had a goal and an assist," Humrichouse said. "Annie Gallego had two goals and one assist, Erica Mendez had a goal and Virginia Pinasco had two assists."
Action was much tougher and evenly matched on Thursday, as the Huskies came into town. Hughson had a 2-1 lead at the half and ended up with a 4-3 win.
"We got off to a sluggish start and just didn't play well the first half," admitted Humrichouse. "In the second half, we came back strong."
Hughson added another in the second half to go up 3-1, but that's when the Lady Cougars pulled it together, scoring two unanswered goals to knot the game at 3-3.
