The California Department of Fish and Wildlife, CDFW, has released information on events and activities for June. As a reminder, all calendar items are subject to change and wildlife areas, ecological reserves and other properties may be closed due to wildfires or storm damage. Hunters and outdoor enthusiasts are strongly encouraged to check for closures before leaving on any recreational trip.

Wetland Meet and Greet at Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, 3207 Rutherford Road, Gridley.
Meet with a wildlife naturalist from the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area. This interactive orientation may include information about Gray Lodge origins, assistance with identifying wildlife or behavior patterns or a brief explanation of conservation management. Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) access permit application deadline for multiple hunting opportunities.

California Invasive Species Action Week, CISAW.
Join agencies and organizations across the state to take action to protect California from the environmental and economic impacts caused by non-native invasive species. Action Week events include habitat restoration and invasive species removal projects, community scientist surveys and field outings. Advanced Hunter Education Webinar: Basic Land Navigation, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Have you ever gotten turned around or lost in the woods? It’s a feeling no one wants to experience. The purpose of this webinar is to give hunters some practical/basic land navigation strategies, which will lead to more confident, safe, successful hunters. Guided Tour of the Nimbus Fish Hatchery, 11 a.m., Nimbus Fish Hatchery Visitor Center, 2001 Nimbus Road, Gold River.
Join CDFW for a free, family-friendly guided tour on the second Saturday of each month to explore the Nimbus Fish Hatchery and neighboring American River. Learn about the amazing life cycle of salmon and steelhead, walk along the American River and discuss hatchery operations. Participants may see fish and other wildlife, such as migratory birds, signs of mammal activity and a variety of insects. Tours are cancelled in extreme heat. Tot Time at Nimbus Fish Hatchery, 11 a.m., 2001 Nimbus Road, Gold River.
Join CDFW for Tot Time at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery Visitor’s Center for nature-themed stories and to create a fun craft. Recommended for children ages 2-7 years, with parent/guardian supervision. Gray Lodge Wildlife Area partially closed for summer repairs, 3207 Rutherford Road, Gridley.
Improvements are coming to the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area in Butte County. Work is scheduled to begin the week of June 15 on the auto tour loop and in several fields on the west side of the wildlife area, west of Parking Lot 14. The auto tour loop, some nearby hiking trails and one viewing hide will be closed during this construction period. There may be periodic roadway impediments during construction as well. Work is expected to conclude around the first week in October, reopening in time for bird watching during peak fall and winter migrations. Advanced Hunter Education Webinar: Muzzleloader Hunting, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
If you’re looking for more hunting opportunities and a better overall hunting experience, we suggest muzzleloader hunting. This webinar will attempt to take some of the mystery out of muzzleloader hunting and will seek to remove initial barriers that often come with learning how to hunt with muzzleloaders. We will also discuss the “why” question. Spoiler alert — the answer includes increased hunting opportunity and the satisfaction that comes from this age-old methodology. Public Meeting to receive comments on CDFW’s Draft Guidelines for Recovery Planning, 10 a.m. to noon, in person at 715 P St., Room 201, Sacramento, or via Zoom.
CDFW is beginning recovery planning for endangered and threatened species listed under the California Endangered Species Act. Our “Draft Guidelines for Recovery Planning” are now available for public review at wildlife.ca.gov/conservation/cesa/recovery-planning.
