Jake Lawrence and Garrett Nash represented the Escalon Wrestling Club (EWC) in the SCWAY Clovis Takedown Tournament at Clovis High School in late November with Lawrence taking the Championship in his weight class in the Jr. High Division and Nash taking fifth in his weight class in the same division.

“Jake went 2-0 and dominated his opponents thoroughly,” said EWC head coach Nate Nash. “Jake was never taken down and his finals opponent forfeited to him. Garrett also wrestled really well.

He lost his first match to a tough kid and the best he could do was come back and take fifth so that’s what he did. He gutted out his last match to win 4-3.”

Coach Nash also noted the competitiveness of the tournament.

“The Fresno/Clovis area is consistently the toughest wrestling in the state and among the toughest in the nation. So for the boys to go down there and place, especially Jake’s performance, is really impressive and Garrett was the youngest kid in his weight class,” explained Nash.

This was a takedown only tournament with no mat wrestling and takedowns counting for one point. Only junior high and high school age wrestlers were eligible to participate. Next up for the EWC is the first Zone 2 SCWAY tournament at McNair High School in Stockton on Dec. 8.

“We have nearly 60 kids out for the club this year and we’re really excited about the season,” said Nash.
