Golfers Close Out Season Competition

The last couple of weeks saw some final competition for the varsity Cougar golf boys on the links.

Head coach Dale Clayton said that on May 9, the varsity golf team traveled for the Divisional Section Meet played at Merced Country Club. There were four divisions and five leagues invited, which included eight high schools teams and several individuals.

In total, 72 high school golfers hit the course in Merced.

“Unfortunately Escalon High School didn’t perform well and didn’t qualify to move on to the Masters,” explained Clayton. “Ripon High School had the lowest score, which qualified them to move on along with the top six individual scores.”

Though the Cougars at a team did not qualify, Escalon’s TJ McNeil made it to the top five with a score of 81 and moved on to the Masters as an individual.

“The Masters was held on May 16 at Elkhorn Country Club (Stockton) with the best high school golfers from all divisions in the Sac-Joaquin area,” Clayton said.

McNeil finished the day shooting an 87 and played well for the most part, except carding a 10 on hole #4.

“TJ started slow during the season but picked up his game toward the end. As he is a junior, I expect him to be a contender next season for the number one spot in the TVL,” noted Clayton. “Overall, our season was a success with our goal to make it to the Sections. The boys worked hard and we are looking forward to next season.”
