Golf Girls Battling For Link Win

Three matches for Escalon's golf girls this week all went on the loss side of the ledger, as the young squad continues looking for its first win.

The busy week featured a Sept. 20 contest against Calaveras, a Sept. 21 meeting with Hughson and a Sept. 23 match at home against Ripon Christian.

"It's tough to play with just four girls," coach Stan Maggard said, noting that the squad is small in numbers but continues to make a go of it in the sport.

"I give them a lot of credit, it takes a lot of courage to go out there and play when you're young and just learning the sport," he said.

At La Contenta against Calaveras on Monday, the girls lost a 253-297 decision. Claire Brumley and Shannon Krein each came in with a 65, Annie Nickerson carded a 79 and Andie Irons shot a 90.

Tuesday, the girls played on the top nine at River Oaks against Hughson, falling 166-185. Brumley turned in the low score of the day to medal, carding a 38. Krein came in at 42, Irons at 52 and Nickerson shot a 53.

"Thursday, we played at home against Ripon Christian and that was much closer," Maggard said. "We lost only by six strokes."

Krein had her best game of the season to date, leading the squad with a 35. Brumley shot a 44, Nickerson had a 49 and Irons shot a 58 on the day.

Ripon Christian took the win, 180-186.

The Lady Cougars will host Bret Harte on Thursday, Sept. 30 at the Escalon Golf Course.
