Girls Kick Off Hoops Play In Lion's Club Invitational

Escalon's varsity basketball girls came away with one win and two close losses in their 34th annual Lion's Club Girl's Invitational Basketball Tournament, while the JV girls made a run for the title, settling for second place honors.

The varsity, with head coach Kristie Cathcart, started with a 33-29 loss to Denair on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Ami Hood paced the girls with 14 points. They battled to a 31-28 loss to Downey on Thursday to start the consolation flight action, with Hood again the team scoring leader with nine points. The girls then turned the offense up a notch and scored a 42-31 win over Delta to take seventh place in the final round on Friday. Elysha Bergwerff put in 14 points in the win, Hood added 13. On the championship flight side, Argonaut went on to win the tournament, putting away Central Catholic 59-25 in the final, while Riverbank defeated Denair 51-44 for third place honors.

On the JV side of the competition, host Escalon won 41-20 over Oakdale in the opener, defeated Central Catholic on Thursday and then lost a tough contest to Argonaut, 33-26, in the championship game. Riverbank took fourth at the JV level, losing to Central Catholic.
