After taking a year off from competition, members of the Escalon Wrestling Club got back into action in November, sending 18 of its approximately 40 wrestlers to an event at Hilmar High School. In a much tougher event than usual because of limits due to COVID, most of the brackets were experienced only.

Wrestling hard rounding back into tournament form and taking fourth place for EWC were Emmitt Cordeiro, August Butler, Johnny Van Dyk, Jimmy McDowell, Drake Faria, Gavin Phillips, Cole McDowell and Luca Cerasi. The tournament was really nail-biting for all the kids in the 13-15 age division with one bracket alone having five former state placers in it.

Looking good and showing the coaches a lot of promise, taking third place, was Noah Dooley. Just missing out on the title, taking second place was the aggressive Kaleb Butler in his first tournament ever. Also showing a lot of skill and heart bouncing back after losing a close first match was Jacob Lee. Also looking great in his first action of the year was the relentless Adam Cordeiro.

EWC had two champions in the competition, out-toughing all his opponents was Jackson Kemp for a first place showing and, in his first action ever, finding ways to win a title was the impressive Colton Faria.

“We were really proud of all the kids,” said coaches Ben Lee and Derek Scott. “We are just happy to have some sense of normalcy back after the crazy last year we’ve all had to endure. This tournament was a buzz saw and our inexperienced kids stepped up and really showed something.”

Coaching the event were Lee and club president and vice president, Derek Scott and Brianne Cerasi.

“We have a great group of coaches and wrestlers this year,” added Scott. “The teams are being led by co-Head Coaches Ben Lee, Clinton Sizuela and Scott Page. Also being assisted by Miguel Vasquez, Zac Morgan and Dominic Freeseha.”

Scott and Cerasi will be on hand to assist in any way needed.

The Escalon Wrestling Club is still taking new members and practicing Mondays through Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
