No Escalon runners qualified to move on to the State Meet in cross country, but there were plenty of outstanding individual and team performances posted in Folsom at the Nov. 16 Section competition.

The JV boys captured a second place finish in the Division 3, 4, 5 race, said head coach Rick Heflin.

“Alvaro Desni has never done a sport in high school before. This year he decided to try cross country. He was doing fine but in the last few weeks, he decided to make his presence known,” Heflin explained. “Last week he led the JV team by breaking his own personal record by over a minute and a half.”

At the Section Meet, Heflin added, they put all the JV divisions together.

“He placed 24th in the race smashing his PR for the course and being the fastest Division 4 runner in the race. The team placed ninth overall but were the first Division 4 team in the race.

In varsity girls action, Briana Briones-Chavarria placed 10th overall, getting the ninth individual medal.

The freshman boys placed fifth in the race with Jaycen Peoples getting the fifth individual medal.

“Both Kim Abney and Mariana Peralta ran a great race to finish the season,” added Heflin. “The team is so thankful for all the support we have received this year.”
