It went to double overtime, but it ultimately went in the win column.
Escalon’s varsity flag football girls traveled to take on the Lathrop Spartans in action this past week and came away with a 7-0 decision.
“It was a very tough, hard fought double overtime win,” said head coach Steve Largent. “Our defense played fundamentally sound flag football and led us to victory, completing the shutout.”
Sammy Lang had five tackles and one interception, while Hannah Wampler had four tackles and an interception. Notching four tackles apiece were Alyssa Ball, Ashley Titsworth and Andrea Fuentes.
“Offensively we did a good enough job moving the ball but unfortunately had a tough time putting the ball into the end zone when we got close,” Largent said. “Credit to Lathrop for playing fundamental football and really making things difficult for us.”
The Escalon squad finally broke through when Violette Kent hit Lang for an 18-yard TD pass in the second overtime.
“It was a tough game and we became frustrated on offense but we battled our way through it and in the end walked away winners,” Largent said.
The team will be at Mountain House this week, for a 7 p.m. contest on Thursday, Oct. 5.
The JV team did not have a game this week; they are scheduled to be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 12 for the JV season finale at Orestimba High School in Newman.
