Sherman Ward Turner passed away at the age of 78 on August 2, 2021. He was born December 3, 1942 to William and Elinor Turner in Portland, Oregon. An only child, he grew up on U.S. Air Force bases around the country, relocating several times. He also spent several years in Japan, following his father’s military career. Sherman was an avid Celtics and Yankees fan, but his deepest loyalties lay with Notre Dame. Coaching brought him much joy: he coached football at St. Mary’s High School, where he also taught for many years, as well as Central Catholic High School.
He was his children’s and grandchildren’s biggest fan and religiously followed their many pursuits. He enjoyed listening to Rock & Roll music, especially Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart. Sherman enjoyed traveling with his wife, and they ventured to many places over the years, his favorite stops being those with warm sunshine. Most of all, he loved his wife Cathy.
Sherman is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Cathy; children, Cathleen Crookshanks of Visalia, Patrick Turner of Modesto, Casey Turner (Brandy Baumgartner) of Modesto, Peggy King (Michael) of Winnetka, IL and Jeff Turner (Paul Day) of San Francisco. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Andrew, Gabi and Blake Crookshanks, Julia and Ashlynn Turner, Ryan, Mary-Cate and Grace King and Mickey Turner.
