Peter Ryken, 81, passed away quietly at his home in Oakdale on Thursday, July 10, 2008.

Mr. Ryken was born January 1, 1927 in Heerjansdam Holland. He spent most of his youth in Holland. During World War II at the age of 17, he joined the Dutch Marines. He spent 2 1/2 years in Indonesia, returning to Holland in 1948. He met Nellie Weeda and married her in 1951. They immigrated to Ontario Canada, and lived in Wainfleet for 10 years. They had three daughters together.

He moved with his family to Escalon, CA to go into the dairy business. He started his own dairy in 1968. His wife Nellie died in 1981. He married Esther Jacobsma in October 1992. He enjoyed working on his ranch in Oakdale and he raised cattle there for many years.

He loved his family and friends. He enjoyed raising cattle and riding horses. He was a hard worker who took great pride in his ranch. His hobbies were swimming, reading, and horse drawn carts. He was a lifelong member of the Christian Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife Esther Ryken; his three daughters, Klazina Mosley and her husband Pat, Nancy Hall and her husband David, and Debi Ryken; three stepchildren, Rosemary Sanz and her husband Steve, Susan Stryker and her husband Russell, and Robert Jacobsma; eight grandchildren; seven step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren; one brother Dries Ryken and two sisters Nel den Hollander and Co Prooi in the Netherlands.

Visitation will be held at Deegan Funeral Chapel in Escalon on Wednesday, July 16 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Farmington Cemetery in Farmington on Thursday, July 17 at 10 a.m. Memorial Service will be held the same day at 11 a.m. at Oakdale Community Christian Reformed Church in Oakdale.

Deegan Funeral Chapel, Escalon, is in charge of the services.
