Lena (Lema) Dupree, 87, also know as Nanny, passed away on Dec. 2, 2008.

She was born May 26, 1921 in Stockton and raised in Manteca. She was of Portuguese descent.

As an adult Lena lived in Escalon and had three children with her late husband, Thomas Lema. Thomas was a rancher and Lena worked at JC Penney. She later remarried to Hank Beck and started a business called the H & L Tavern, which was established for 12 years. This was a very family oriented business and all their customers were considered family.

After Hank passed away she married Roy Dupree and moved to Ripon where they lived for over 20 years. Roy was a hoof trimmer for Dupree Hoof Trimming and Lena retired and became a housewife.

She loved to bowl, travel and play cards with her friends and family. Every Sunday everyone including her friend Gladys would meet at Lena's house to play hand and foot. It was the Queen Bee's versus the Others.

Survivors include her three children, Evelyn Dupree of Modesto, Thomas Lema of Jamestown, and Dennis Lema of Modesto; 11 grandchildren, Diane Valek, Debbie Gonzales, Lori Lasater, Tammy Ragsdale, Kim Kamminga, Thomas Lema, Rhonda Woodlief, Nicole Krusemark, Joey Lynn Sprenkles, Kristen Almanza, and Sara Boyer. She is also survived by 28 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren; a niece, Mary Leonardo; and three nephews, Louie, Buck and Shorty Leonardo.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 20 years Roy Dupree; her parents, Frank and Maria Leonardo; her brothers, Frank and Manuel Leonardo; and her granddaughter, Wendy Lema.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 6 at Deegan Ripon Memorial Chapel.
