Johannes “Jan” Petrus Van der Werff peacefully passed away at the age of 91, with his loving family by his side. “Jan” was born January 25, 1929 in Zoeterwoude, South Holland to Adrianus and Wilhelmina Van der Werff, and was one of 11 children. As a young adult, Jan’s dream was to follow his brothers to America and live close to them in California. That dream came true in 1973. Jan was always a hard worker and very driven. From a “krullenjongen” (carpenter’s apprentice) to a Carpenter, to passing all of his exams in English to become a Contractor, he never gave up! After retirement, Jan spent his days in his garden, doing puzzles and watching Jeopardy, he also looked forward to and loved spending time with his family.
Jan is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Carolina “Rina”, his children; Wilke (Piet) Versteege of Holland, Anja (Joe) Graham of Waterford, Adrian Van der Werff of Escalon, Pete (Liz) Van der Werff of Escalon, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His 10 brothers and sisters precede him in death.
Deegan Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Van der Werff family during this difficult time. A private family burial was held at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. To send Jan’s family condolences, please visit his tribute page at www.deeganfuneralchapels.com. In Lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Community Hospice.
