James Leroy Coley Sr., 75, passed away on Sunday, April 19 in Modesto.

He was born May 29, 1933 in Modesto to James Ambrose Coley and Eva Sylvia (Bonzi) DiPucchio. He lived in the Modesto/Escalon area his whole life.

He was the grandson of James William Coley and Corinda Belle (Ramey) Coley, one of the early pioneers of Escalon, moving from Virginia to settle in Escalon in 1908. He was a loving son, father and grandfather. His charm and wit was enjoyed by family and a large circle of friends. He enjoyed calling people by nicknames, playing cards and working in his cactus garden in his later years. He owned and operated several different meat markets and a slaughterhouse. He also owned the Casino Inn, a card room in Modesto. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his children, Judy Brose of Santa Cruz, Joan Faria of Escalon, Anita (Gary) Heath of Santa Cruz, Pinki (Shan) Gilmore of Santa Cruz and James Leroy Coley Jr. of Waterford; his grandchildren, Joesph Rampoldi and Dominick Faria, both of Escalon, Kristen Pocock, Gabrielle Gilmore, Genelle Gilmore, Trevor Heath, Tanner Heath and Presley Heath, all of Santa Cruz; and one sister, Ruby Mills of Modesto.

Visitation will be on Thursday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a,m, at Deegan Funeral Chapel, 1441 San Joaquin St., Escalon.

A graveside service will also be on Thursday, April 23 at 11 a.m. at Burwood Cemetery, 28320 East River Road in Escalon.
