Trustee Boundaries - Hearing Outlines School Changes

Information about proposed changes in seating board members for the Escalon Unified School District will be presented in a public hearing next week.

Based on the 2010 Census figures, the Escalon Unified School District conducted a demographic study of the governing board boundaries of the district and submitted a proposal for rearrangement of trustee areas to the San Joaquin County Committee on School District Organization. District officials said the rearrangement equally distributes the population in each trustee area. The Escalon Governing Board also took action to transition to a "by-trustee area" election system; a change from the current method of election "from trustee area."

The new system of election being proposed, noted officials, would result in the school district being divided into trustee areas and a governing board member would then be elected from each trustee area by only the registered voters in that particular trustee area where the governing board member resides, not a vote of the entire school community.

The San Joaquin County Committee on School District Organization will host the public hearing at the Escalon Unified School District Office on Yosemite Avenue on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m.

Discussion of the proposed changes is scheduled and school district and county officials are also looking to receive input from the public regarding the proposal.
