Top ranked West Campus had a fight on its hands but still prevailed in Thursday night’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championship soccer game.

Winners by lopsided scores in the first two rounds, the Warriors were held scoreless by a tenacious Escalon squad in the first half of the game at Elk Grove High School on March 1. Two unanswered goals in the second half by West Campus provided the margin of victory.

It was the second straight time that West Campus and Escalon had met in the boys soccer championship game and the second time the Warriors have taken the title over the Cougars.

Still, head coach Paul Silva said he was proud of the team and said they had a good game plan going in, and were effective in frustrating the West Campus squad early.

The Cougars had a couple of near misses in shots on goal and had some periods of sustained pressure during the contest.

They fell by the 2-0 final but were Section runner-ups and gave the Warriors a hard fought contest.

Despite rainy weather throughout much of the day, the players, coaches and fans that made the trip to Elk Grove were pleased that skies cleared for the contest, with no rain falling during the duration of the title game.
