Final plans are being put in place for the observance of Veterans’ Day in Escalon, with the traditional parade downtown and ceremony at the Memorial Wall at the city’s Community Center.

The festivities are planned for Monday, Nov. 11 with the Main Street parade starting at 10:30 a.m.

Coordinated by the local American Legion and American Legion Riders of Post 263 in Escalon, Angelo Blanco will serve as the Grand Marshal for this year’s parade.

Post member Mark Sward said they are especially looking to honor Women in the Military this year, recognizing their “service, honor and courage.” Any woman veteran that wants to ride in the parade should contact Al Bellinger at 209-838-3388 or Sward at 209-838-3050.

“We also really want to encourage everyone to come to the Community Center after the parade for the ceremony at the memorial wall,” Sward said.

The parade typically starts the day at 10:30 a.m. and features a variety of school and community groups, businesses, local leaders and more, dispersing shortly after 11 a.m.

The ceremony at the wall adjacent to the Community Center on Escalon Avenue starts about 11:30 a.m., giving people just enough time to make their way over from the parade. Following the ceremony, the Post hosts a barbecued chicken dinner, with sit down and take-out orders both available.

Parade coordinator this year is Vince Giovaniello and he can be reached at 209-604-9100 for more information on how to participate in the parade.

Tickets for the barbecue are available from Legion members or by contacting Bellinger at 838-3388. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 years and under.

Even before the community’s Nov. 11 celebration, Escalon High School’s Leadership Class is planning a Veterans’ Day Rally and is looking for local veterans to come and take part in those festivities. Local veterans that would like to speak to students at the high school assembly are invited to contact teacher Natalie Moring at the high school by calling 838-7073, ext. 507. That special assembly is being planned for Friday, Nov. 8 at the high school.
