Add another accolade to the list of those already picked up by a couple of standout seniors at Escalon High School.

Taylor Laugero and Logan Widmer were honored earlier this month at a special luncheon at the Turlock Country Club, selected as Trans-Valley League Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

“You get to nominate two kids to represent your school,” said Escalon High Athletic Director Mark Loureiro, noting that Laugero and Widmer both fit the bill as being major contributors to their sports as well as standing out in the classroom.

“From there, the league gets to pick one boy and one girl to represent the TVL at the Section level, Taylor was chosen for that.”

Both were excited and humbled by the TVL honor and Laugero was doubly honored with the Section recognition.

“We’re very proud,” added Loureiro. “These were two outstanding kids representing our school; they excel in the classroom, on the athletic field. Besides winning these awards, they are truly respected by their classmates, teammates, teachers and administrators.”

Laugero is a four-year volleyball and tennis standout for EHS.

“I didn’t realize how many people would be at this luncheon,” Laugero said, admitting she didn’t know at first how significant the award was. “I am honored and grateful.”

Widmer, a four year player on both the EHS football field and baseball diamond, agreed that it wasn’t an honor to take lightly.

“I feel very blessed and humbled,” he said. “Crazy to think we were the two people they wanted to represent our school.”

Both also had the chance to hear Loureiro speak at the luncheon, sharing information about them and their achievements at EHS.

“He was very generous,” Laugero said of Loureiro and his remarks.

Both students were able to attend the Turlock event with family and school officials. Laugero was additionally due to receive a $1,000 A. Dale Lacky/CSEA scholarship through the CIF Sac Joaquin Section at an April 19 breakfast ceremony in Lodi, featuring top scholar athletes from throughout the Section.
