Ten local elementary school students – six from Dent and four from Van Allen – got the chance to ride to school in style recently. The 10, chosen as coloring contest winners for Fire Prevention Week in a contest sponsored by the Escalon Fire Department, were picked up by firefighters with the department’s engines and taken to school.

Van Allen winners got the lift to school on Wednesday, Nov. 4 while the Dent students came to school aboard the fire trucks on Thursday, Nov. 5.

Grade level winners for Van Allen were Ryan Huebner, kindergarten; Lilliann Ruiz, first; Marina Franzia, second; Riley Mayns, third.

At Dent, winners were Karyna Dalpogetti, kindergarten; Valeria Galvan-Huerta, first; Carolina Torres-Ochoa, second; Nate Millard, third; Makenna Williamson, fourth; Ayden Wilson, fifth.

“We wanted to do something different,” Escalon Battalion Chief Terry Pinheiro said of offering the Fire Prevention Week contest and the special ‘pick up and delivery’ for students. “It was a way to bring in something new.”
