A grisly discovery in a canal at South Henry and River Road in Escalon has authorities still looking for some answers.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department received a call from a citizen about 10:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, reporting a possible body in the canal at the location. Escalon Fire Department personnel were also called to the scene, off Santa Fe and River, responding with deputies.

“Patrol officers arrived at the location and did confirm that it was indeed a human body,” Deputy Dave Konecny wrote in a press release issued by the sheriff’s department.

San Joaquin Sheriff’s Detectives were brought in and are investigating whether foul play was involved. The victim’s identity was being withheld pending next of kin notification and no identity was available at press time on Tuesday.

Authorities also did not release any information regarding the gender or approximate age of the victim. The investigation is continuing.
