An early morning crash on Saturday, Jan. 18 left an Escalon man in critical condition, the driver rolling over his pick-up truck into an orchard about 2 a.m.

According to information from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department, the driver fled when deputies attempted to stop him on suspicion of driving under the influence, and he then led them on a chase.

The attempted traffic stop was made near River and Sexton roads and the crash occurred nearly seven miles away, on Van Allen Road, near the intersection with Dodds Road. Escalon and Farmington fire department crews both responded to the scene, the call coming in around 2:15 a.m. of a rollover crash with a pin in at the location.

Authorities said the driver was taken to a Modesto hospital with critical injuries; Escalon Police were asked to contact his family to let them know he was transported to Memorial Hospital. The driver was identified as 21-year-old Drew Eldredge.
