Community Hospice Appoints New Medical Director

Community Hospice, a nonprofit hospice agency serving the Central Valley since 1979, welcomed a new full time Medical Director, Dr. Centi Younan, on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015.

Dr. Younan succeeds Dr. Garfield Pickell, who had served as the Community Hospice Medical Director the past 10 years. At Dr. Pickell’s request to retire as Medical Director, he will continue to serve as a part time Associate Medical Director primarily serving Community Hospice patients and families at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson.

DeSha McLeod, President and CEO of Community Hospice. “Dr. Younan comes to us with extensive education, training and leadership that fully supports our mission of providing compassionate and quality care to the patients and families we serve.”

Dr. Younan served as a hospitalist at Sutter Memorial Medical Center in Modesto since 2005. Since 2010, Dr. Younan has served as the Co-Medical Director of the Palliative Care Department at Sutter Memorial Medical Center. She is also an active member of the Medical Ethics Department. Her role included presentations to the Central Valley Regional Directors on palliative care performance at the hospital, as well as educating staff and fellow physicians, including attending multidisciplinary meetings and presenting palliative care topics to other sub-specialties.

Dr. Younan is a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine in New York. She completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Stanford Hospital and her Internal Medicine Residency at the UCLA School of Medicine, Kern Medical Center. Dr. Younan furthered her education by attending Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine where she studied Palliative and End of Life Care, as well as trained for Palliative Care Practice at Harvard Medical School Center for Palliative Care Education and Practice. Dr. Younan is licensed by the State of California, is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and is a Board Certified Diplomat in Hospice and Palliative Care.

Community Hospice is a nonprofit, community based hospice agency serving the Central Valley since 1979. Community Hospice provides compassionate and quality care, education and support to terminally ill patients and their families, regardless of the ability to pay. Care extends to over 250 patients every day in private homes, skilled nursing facilities and at the 16-room Alexander Cohen Hospice House.
