January is Thyroid Awareness Month. The thyroid is a small gland located in the base of your neck that is part of the endocrine system. The gland is responsible for various functions including the metabolism, regulating body temperature, cognitive function, digestion, and much more. The symptoms of course vary depending on the condition. One may be diagnosed with hypothyroidism which means the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone for the body’s needs. If the thyroid produces too much of the hormone, hyperthyroidism may be diagnosed.
