Escalon’s moment of remembrance in honor of those lost in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 will be staged at the Escalon Fire District at 1749 Coley Ave., Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The Community Moment of Silence and Prayer is open to all who wish to attend and starts at 9:11 a.m.

Fire Chief Rick Mello said the brief gathering at the flagpole outside the fire station is designed to give people the chance to pause and reflect; honoring the memory of those lost in the terrorist attacks and those in the military lost in the War on Terror since. That includes James R. Layton, a Navy Corpsman from Escalon killed in action in Afghanistan on Sept. 8, 2009 while tending to the wounds of fallen comrades.

The community is also encouraged to fly the flag and support our troops that day and every day, said Mello, “so that we will never forget.”
