Like their high school counterparts did a short time ago, students at El Portal Middle School recently brought in pennies to help raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Classes competed against each other to see which could raise the most money, with pennies the primary coin sought. Other coins and paper money detracted from the ‘penny’ count and, though helpful in raising funds, did not figure in to a class collection total. Altogether, said El Portal officials, the fundraiser brought in over $1,200. Collection was done during third period and a total of seven third period classes brought in over $100 each. That entitled them to a ‘donut day’ with student leadership delivering boxes of donuts to the classes.

Classes collecting the most were: Mrs. Gligorea, $179.95; Ms. Maddox, $163.40; Mrs. Michaels, $151; Ms. Gentry, $147.59; Mrs. Crooker, $112; Mr. Ney, $110; Mrs. Belletto, $103.
