El Portal Middle School’s Student of the Month selections were announced recently, the program offered through the Escalon Kiwanis Club.

One student from each grade level is recognized each month and the most recent honorees were Bryce McPherrin, sixth grade; Andres Cornejo, seventh; and Emily Bavaro, eighth grade.

Teacher Dennis Robinson nominated sixth grader Bryce McPherrin for the honor, noting that he is a student who always strives to do his best.

“Bryce is one of those notable students who occasionally comes along with a nice personality, a good sense of humor, and a great deal of talent,” said Robinson.

He plays alto saxophone in the Intermediate Band and he often volunteers to demonstrate how to play difficult passages.

“I have never seen him treat anyone in a negative fashion, but always in a kind and courteous manner,” added Robinson.

Earning his nomination from teacher Molly Capps, seventh grader Andres Cornejo was saluted for his positive leadership, outstanding citizenship and athletic performance.

“Andres is a well-deserving applicant,” said Capps. “Andres is extremely polite with all of his teachers, and very friendly with fellow students.

“He loves to learn, and is a very high achieving student.”

Teacher Fred Bunnell offered eighth grade student Emily Bavaro up for the nomination.

“Emily Bavaro has become a tremendous asset as a TA in my World History class as she regularly works with struggling students, as well as organizing files, assignments, tests and projects,” said Bunnell. “She has also been a great help as the scorekeeper/clock manager of the eighth grade boys basketball team, where she has given up time during vacation and after school to help out with the team.”

The selected students are honored at a breakfast hosted by the Kiwanis Club for their achievements.
