Escalon Police are investigating a reported lottery scam that occurred in the area this past week, with a man telling officers he was approached by two subjects as he walked on First Street on Friday, Nov. 14.
The man, identified as a 65-year-old Escalon resident, told police he was out walking Friday in the 900 block of First Street when he was approached by two men. The victim described them as Hispanic males, both in their 50s, who said they had a winning lottery ticket but couldn’t cash it because they were not in the country legally.
According to the victim, the men said the ticket was valued at $14,000 and they convinced him to trade the ticket for some cash. They took him to a couple of locations in Modesto for him to obtain the funds, then reportedly left the man when he went inside a store in Modesto to get some paperwork to complete the transfer.
The suspects reportedly fled with $8,500 in cash the victim had obtained and left him stranded in Modesto, with what was determined to be a non-winning lottery ticket. The incident happened earlier in the day on Friday but was reported to officers at the police department at about 5:45 p.m.
Police are asking anyone that may have seen the suspects in the area or have any information that may help with pursuing the case to contact them at 838-7093.
One suspect was described as being about five feet, nine inches tall and weighing 175 pounds, the other was five feet, seven inches and about 200 pounds.
