Community Gears For Fourth Of July

Fireworks booths can open for business this weekend in Escalon, with three community groups along with the city hosting booths for the holiday period.

Escalon is one of the few San Joaquin County communities that allows the Safe and Sane fireworks to be sold and used, the city council approving an ordinance several years ago allowing the fireworks. San Joaquin County does not, but individual cities can enact an ordinance to bypass the county rule.

Sales can begin at noon on Sunday, June 28 and the booths are allowed to remain open for business through Saturday, July 4 at midnight.

The City of Escalon keeps one booth site for itself, then puts the other three booths up for grabs. Organizations complete the application and winners are drawn at random in a lottery style drawing.

This year, the Escalon Covenant Church, Escalon Sports Boosters and Escalon Ag Boosters were selected. Escalon Covenant will set up in the MarVal Main Street Market parking lot in the 1900 block of McHenry; Escalon Ag Boosters will have their booth outside Big Boy Market on Jackson Avenue. As of press time, the Sports Boosters had not settled on their location. The City of Escalon booth is traditionally set up in the plaza along Jackson Avenue, situated adjacent to Hula's.

Groups running the fireworks sales put their proceeds back into programs and services for youths and the community.

Meanwhile, Escalon Covenant is also planning a special Independence Day Celebration on Sunday, slated from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Escalon Community Center on Escalon Avenue. There will be water slides, games, cotton candy, sno cones, popcorn, ice cream, plus a barbecue and food from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Also planned is live music and fireworks to wrap up the event. All are invited; bring your own lawn chair. A $5 donation is suggested to attend and for more information, call the church at 838-7600.
