Trans-Valley League play continued for Escalon’s varsity soccer girls this week, the squad opening up with a 1-1 tie against Hughson. Then Hilmar came to town and defeated the Lady Cougars by a 4-1 final.

Against Hughson, Mya Beary notched the goal with the assist from Georgina Gallo.

“It was off a corner kick and was a header,” said head coach Jamie Peoples. “Beautiful goal.”

Leticia Gutierrez had four saves in goal for Escalon as they battled the Lady Huskies to a draw.

On Thursday, Hilmar was the opponent and the game on the home field for Escalon saw them take a league loss.

“Liz Cortes had the goal and Leti had seven saves,” Peoples said. “We end our season Thursday (Feb. 7) against Riverbank, which is also Senior Night.”

Senior players for the varsity squad will be recognized at the contest, which is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.

Escalon’s junior varsity girls took a loss to Hilmar on the home field on Thursday and then got in a few extra contests in a round robin-style competition featuring several Trans-Valley League teams over the weekend.

While they didn’t put any of their games in the win column, getting on the field for more playing time was a good experience, as not all TVL schools have JV teams and the girls have not had as much opportunity to take the field as their varsity counterparts during the regular season.
