Varsity Girls Steal Win From Argonaut

Weather forced the cancellation of a road game on Thursday, so the varsity softball Lady Cougars played just one game this past week.

It was at home, hosting Argonaut in a non-league contest on Tuesday.

"We won 4-3," said coach Dianne Teixeira. "We scored a run in the first, one in the third and two in the sixth."

After taking the one run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Cougars held off Argonaut in the top of the seventh for the win.

"Nicky Brown pitched, with Mandy San Julian catching," Teixeira added. "Nicky had seven strikeouts."

Escalon had nine hits on the day and were a bit sloppy in the field, committing four errors. Argonaut had just three hits and made two errors, one of which allowed the go-ahead run to score.

In the first inning, San Julian scored on an RBI double from Shannon Krein, while Melissa Nickas got on in the third inning, moved to second on a bunt and scored on a hit from San Julian.

Two runs in the sixth came on a combination of plays. Brown reached base, moved up when Carmen Dollarhide got hit by a pitch and then scored on a single from Amber Wood. Michelle Williams then reached and Dollarhide was able to score on a steal of home, putting the varsity girls in the lead.

"We made some mental errors, some physical errors but we got lucky and held them off," said Teixeira.

Thursday, the girls were on the way to Amador for another non-league match, deciding to take off despite the rain showers.

"We got about halfway there and got a call that it was hailing in Amador, so we turned around," Teixeira said.

This week, the girls will host Ripon Christian in a Thursday game, April 1, at 3:30 p.m.
