Nine seniors and one junior make up Escalon's varsity Lady Cougars basketball team, though a few have not played at the high school level before. The squad is looking for ways to win, working to come together as a cohesive team, in the early going.

"Only four played last year," noted varsity coach Kristie Cathcart.

Returning are seniors Elysha Bergwerff, Liz Mendonca, Caitlin Brooks and junior Ami Hood. Also on the roster - some with previous experience but none last season -are Analucia Fernandez, Alexis Belman, Lily Cajias, Presli Pilati, Revecca Rangel and Cierra Clason. The team had a tough night on Monday, Dec. 6 against Turlock Christian, losing 58-12 with Bergwerff the leading scorer with five points. They traveled to the Turlock Christian Tournament for games Thursday, Friday and Saturday and opened up against Livingston on Thursday. It was a 62-16 loss, but the team had four players on the board, each contributing four points. Belman, Hood, Cajias and Brooks notched the points.

"They just put pressure on us and we couldn't handle it," explained Cathcart. "Then we played Gustine on Friday and got a 32-27 win."

Against Gustine, Bergwerff came alive, knocking down five 3's and pouring in 19 total points.

"She was just lights out," Cathcart said, noting that the game featured two evenly matched teams and Escalon was able to get the upper hand. Brooks had nine points, with two each from Cajias and Hood to round out the scoring. Saturday, the girls faced off with Summerville in the consolation match and took a 44-23 loss.

"We just couldn't make a basket," Cathcart said of the frustrating contest. "We scored just one point in the first quarter."

Hood had 12 points in another solid game on the court, with four by Mendonca, three from Bergwerff and two each from Belman and Brooks.

"We'll have shots," Cathcart said of the team getting good looks, "we just need to find a way to make them go in."

Hood was named to the All Tournament Team for the Lady Cougars, who are next slated to travel to Ripon Christian for a game on Thursday, Dec. 16. The varsity game starts at 7:30 p.m.
