Just one match was on their schedule, but the Escalon tennis players made the most of it, shutting out visiting Hughson 7-0 in a Trans-Valley League contest on Friday, March 20.

"We're off to a great start," said coach Dan Thompson, as the Cougars improved to 2-0 in league play, 4-0 overall.

Getting solid play from all teams, the Cougars cruised to the easy win.

At boys singles, Daniel Thompson was a 6-1, 6-1 winner and sophomore Kristi Rigg stepped up to fill the girls singles slot in the absence of normal starter Kaitlyn Brayton. Rigg didn't miss a beat, handling her opponent 6-1, 6-3.

"She did a great job for us," said Thompson. "I'm proud of her, the way she was able to step it up."

Katie Aprile and Julia Thompson teamed for an overpowering 6-0, 6-0 win in the number one girls doubles, with Megan Merseth and Lindsey Ellisen teaming for an identical 6-0, 6-0 win at the number two doubles slot.

"That was the first league match of the year for Lindsey and she helped Megan take the win," Thompson said.

Top boys doubles team Jon Segale and Vince Aufdermaur had a spirited match, eventually taking a 6-3, 6-1 win.

"There were some good exchanges out there, it was a fun match to watch," noted the coach. "Our second boys doubles team was tougher, they had a three-set match and dropped the first set 2-6."

After the rocky start, the team of Eric Metzler and Gilles Benit came together, getting focused on the court and winning the next two 6-2, 6-1 to take the win.

Rounding out the day with an impressive win was the mixed doubles of Robbie Hoile and Presli Pilati, a team that Thompson said brings a formidable game to the court every time out. They were nearly perfect in a 6-0, 6-0 win.

"It was a fun afternoon," Thompson said. "We had a great result."

The Cougars were slated to play against Modesto Christian on Monday afternoon, March 23 after The Times went to press, taking the court at the SOS Club in Modesto. They also have a trip to Riverbank on the schedule for Friday, March 27.
