Ten Cross Country Runners Qualify For Section Meet

A Saturday in Frogtown saw a mixed bag of results for the cross country Cougars. They competed in the subsection meet in Angels Camp on Nov. 3.

“It was a rough day for us but it was also a great day. If you measure our success by the places we got, it was a rough day. We only qualified 10 athletes to sections,” noted head coach Rick Heflin. “If you measure our success from where we started and where we ended, then we had an awesome day.”

Heflin said while there won’t be as many Cougars moving on as they would have liked, there were still plenty of positives to take out of the day.

“So many athletes posted their best times. It was awesome to watch runners from the start of the season reach so far. Our section, especially in our Division 4, has gotten so competitive that if you are not running all year there is little chance of you being successful compared to others,” he explained. “Our top varsity boy, Gabe Romero, placed 55th in the race. The team placed 16th out of 28 but only 10 teams in the varsity races move on.”

Top runner for the varsity girls was Briana Briones; she placed seventh overall in the race and will move on to sections.

The JV boys, meanwhile, placed eighth in the Division 3-4-5 race but only the top six teams move on.

“Our JV boys were second in Division 4 but in the JV race they combine the divisions. Gino Stern led the team by placing 39th in 20:26,” Heflin said.

Next for Escalon was Clayton Ferreira, placing 44th in 20:44. Daniel Luis placed 46th with a career PR at 20:47, Miguel Marmol was 51st in 21:00, Max Teague finished 62nd in 21:17.

The sophomore boys had two qualifiers, CJ Borrego taking 21st in 12:45 and Josh Corrales finishing 31st in 13:11.

The frosh/soph girls placed fifth and qualified as a team for sections. They were led by Karla Cordova, 14th in 16:01, followed by Chloe Hernandez 26th in 16:39, Jill Junqueiro 27th in 16:39, Samantha Torres 34th in 17:15, Julia Avila 39th in 17:38, Rachel Lau 43rd in 18:05 and Belen Luchuga-Soto 46th in 18:15.

The next race for those qualifying is the Section meet in Folsom on Nov. 10. The first race will be varsity girls at 2:50 p.m.
