Picking up where they left off, Escalon baseball players have put together a string of wins to kick off the summer season.

Gone are the seniors, but the underclassmen have formed a cohesive unit that has started out with a 5-0 run.

On Friday, June 1, the team had a doubleheader at Gregori, taking game one by a 10-4 final and the second by a 9-5 decision.

Brandon Grogan and Alex Loureiro rapped doubles, with a 2-for-3 day with a triple from Robbie Steves. Nathan Chunn and Raymond Guevara doubled as well, while Brent Montgomery and Ben Hood shared the pitching duties. Defensively, Alec Nerland played solid at second base.

"Tuesday, we went to Hilmar and took a 9-1 victory," said coach Greg Largent. "Brandon Grogan had a solo home run to lead off the game."

Largent utilized five different pitchers, with Montgomery, Kevin Gregorio, Hood, Nerland and Guevara all seeing some time on the mound.

"We got doubles from Guevara and Tad Dimas and Luis Estrada played some nice defense," Largent added.

Thursday, June 7, two games were on the schedule at Lincoln of Stockton, with two more wins going on the books for the summer squad.

"Philip Kimble was 2-for-3 in the first game, Hood had a two-out RBI single, Guevara and Nerland also got two-out hits," Largent explained of the 4-1 victory.

Montgomery went six innings, striking out eight and Grogan came on to get the save. Chunn handled the catching duties and he, along with Dimas in centerfield and Nerland at second, played great defense throughout the contest.

Game two was a battle, but the Cougars pulled out a 7-6 win.

Kimble was 2-for-3, Steves had a double and Gregorio a triple.

"We were down going into the sixth but we got a nice triple by Marco Paolo Diaz Morales that scored two runners, Estrada and Guevara," Largent said.

Hood went five innings and ended up with the win, Guevara got the save.

Grogan cut down a runner at the plate on an assist from right field, showing great defense and a strong arm.

Escalon will play this week in the Steve Streeter Tournament with all their games at Gregori High, with scheduled contests coming up today, Wednesday, at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and a Thursday game at 9:45 a.m. The team was scheduled to kick off the tourney with a 5:15 p.m. game Tuesday.

The younger team, primarily JV players, is also getting busy this summer, with about 20 students taking part.
