Strong Finish For Golf Girls In League

Despite some sloppy conditions at Micke Grove, Escalon golfers carded a respectable score at the Valley Foothill League championships on Monday, Oct. 18.

Best score of the day came from Lady Cougar Claire Brumley, who qualified for subsections with a 104.

"Claire played her best round," coach Stan Maggard said of the solid performance under pressure. "They take the top four teams to subsections, then the top six individuals after the teams, Claire was number four out of the six."

Brumley was slated to represent Escalon at the subsection meet on Oct. 25 at Diablo Grande.

Maggard said he was excited for the team that they played well in the league tournament, finishing eighth out of 13 teams entered.

"It's a very nice course but challenging," he added.

Escalon shot a 493 for the 18 holes on the par 72 course at Micke Grove. After Brumley with her 104, Shannon Krein came in with a 118, Annie Nickerson carded a 132, Andie Irons a 149 and Brittany Reichmuth shot a 157. The lowest four scores are used in the competition.

"The conditions weren't too bad, the only bad thing was that we finished in the dark, we didn't get started until about 1 p.m. and with 13 teams, it took a long time," Maggard said.

Bret Harte was the winner of the league tournament with a 398. They were followed by Central Catholic, 406; Linden, 415; Patterson, 448; Calaveras, 451; Ripon, 471; Hughson, 481; Escalon, 493; Ripon Christian, 495; Modesto Christian, 497; Hilmar, 513; Riverbank, 536; Livingston 551.

Maggard said the league play was especially pleasing for the Lady Cougars because they finished ahead of a couple of teams that had beaten them during the regular season.

"We spent most of the season playing with just four girls," Maggard noted. "The girls all in all did well, they came on strong."
