Their first outing of the season was a 5-0 setback for Escalon's varsity Lady Cougars on the soccer field.
But coach Craig Humrichouse isn't too worried about the shutout by Oakdale, suffered on a soggy field on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
"We played very well for about the first 30 to 35 minutes," Humrichouse said. "Then we got a little bit tired, they started to break us down a bit."
Host Oakdale had already played a handful of games before hosting Escalon and, according to Humrichouse, his Lady Cougars are not yet in game-playing shape.
"We're missing a couple of players that are still involved in basketball, we have a few that have only had a couple of practices," he pointed out, noting that the squad will come together over the next few weeks.
"We got good play out of Kaity Bojorquez and Ashley Brown, plus we have a new transfer, Paige Fulgieri, out of Oakdale and she played well for us," Humrichouse noted. "Sable McCleery played real well for us and Sarah Quiroz started in goal, she is still involved with cheerleading but she is somebody that will do real well."
The Lady Cougars could not break through the Oakdale defense to score, while the host Lady Mustangs wore down their opponent and tallied five unanswered goals.
A scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 22 game at home against Manteca was canceled for Escalon but the girls are scheduled to play at Calaveras on Thursday, then will be in the Riverbank Tournament with games Friday and Saturday.
JV coach Jamie Humrichouse said her team played extremely well against the Oakdale girls, battling to a 2-2 tie.
"The fields were in horrible condition," she said, but the squads - at both the JV and varsity levels - battled through the poor conditions to get the games in.
"Ashleigh Weeda scored a goal, Kristie Homen had an assist, Meredith Rosales had a goal and an assist," she said. "Andie Irons was in goal for us and she had an outstanding game, she played really well."
The starting 11 for the JV team, in fact, played the entire game with no substitutions.
"It was definitely a defensive game," said Humrichouse. "I was very, very happy with them."
