Despite putting up a good fight against both opponents, the JV girls went 0-for-2 this week on the basketball court.
The losses at home closed out the season for the squad, which battled its way through a winless campaign in league play.
Hosting Ripon Christian on Tuesday, Feb. 17, the squad fell in a closely contested 34-27 game.
"It was a pretty good game overall," said coach Dave Lattig. "We could have beaten them but turnovers hurt us."
Jennifer Costa paced the JV girls with eight points, Stephanie Williamson added six.
"We weren't shooting that well but we were still working hard,"' added Lattig.
Ripon Christian jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, Escalon trimmed it to 13-9 at the half, then kept pace with the Knights in an 11-11 third quarter. But the visitors stayed a few points ahead of Escalon in the final frame to take the win.
Hosting undefeated Hilmar on Thursday to finish the season, the girls lost a 61-33 decision.
"Hilmar went 23-0, they didn't lose a game, they were just a great team," admitted Lattig.
Still, there were some solid efforts from the Lady Cougars, including two in double figures. Costa was again the leader, this time putting in 12 points. Megan McNinch chipped in with 11.
The teams battled in the first period, with Hilmar taking just an 11-9 edge. They put some space between them with a 20-8 run in the second quarter, Escalon kept it closer in the third, trailing Hilmar by just a 12-8 margin in the frame. But the Yellowjackets poured it on again in the final period and outdistanced the Lady Cougars.
"It was tough," Lattig admitted of winning just two games during the season, those wins coming prior to league play. "They did a good job mostly, they stayed in each game and started every game mentally prepared."
What is encouraging to the coach is that half of his players were freshmen and already have a year of JV experience, which should make them a stronger team to contend with next season.
