Pheasant Hunts On The Schedule Through Dec. 4

The Stockton Sportsmen's Club will be operating its pheasant program again this year in cooperation with Manteca area landowners.

As in years past, this more than 50-year-old program has over three thousand adult male ring-necked pheasants to be released within the co-op area. Pheasants are released every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday during the hunting season, as well as Thanksgiving Day. The co-op will be open every day to hunters through Saturday, Dec. 4.

Hunting on co-op property costs $25 per day for adults with a valid hunting license. An Upland Game Stamp is required of all hunters, except junior license holders. Juniors (under 16) are charged $10 to hunt and must be accompanied by an adult (18 or older). A $5 fee is charged per person for an identification armband, which is refundable upon return to the registration desk. Reservations are not needed, so hunters will not have to plan far in advance to hunt. Interested hunters should report to the Registration Trailer beginning at 7 a.m. to obtain registration materials and a map of the hunting areas. Most fields are within a few minutes of the registration trailer.

On Friday, Nov. 26, the Club is offering a free day of hunting pheasants for Junior and Women hunters. Juniors must have a license and be accompanied by a non-hunting adult.

The Stockton Sportsmen's Club co-op routinely arranges for over 2000 acres to hunt on during the season. Alfalfa will be the primary cover crop again this year. Alfalfa is a preferred crop since it allows for easy walking, and hunting dogs can work the areas without leaving the visual contact and control of the hunter. Many hunters are successful even without the aid of a dog; however, having a dog to retrieve is a definite advantage to hunters in the fields.

The general hunting area is located between Interstate 5 and Highway 99 in Manteca. The Registration Trailer is located on McMullin Road, off south Airport Way in Manteca. From either Highway 99 or Interstate 5, hunters should take the Highway 120 exit and proceed to the Airport Way exit. Travel south on Airport Way, approximately 5 miles and turn right on McMullin Road. Follow the signs to the Registration Trailer.

The Stockton Sportsmen's Club has been offering this program to public hunters since 1952. People come from all over California to participate in these quality hunts. Club members work together with Manteca landowners to provide this hunting opportunity. The landowners are the key to making this co-op work. Without their support, thousands of hunters who have participated in the past would not have had such an affordable opportunity to hunt pheasants.

Safety is stressed at the co-op and Club rules as well as the Department of Fish and Game regulations must be obeyed at all times. Site safety rules and regulations require the wearing of a blaze-orange garment by everyone in the field, including non-hunters. A cap, coat, or vest is the best way to satisfy this requirement.

The raffle prizes this year are two shotguns, one for adults and one for juniors. Tickets for the raffle are available at the Registration Trailer.

The Stockton Sportsmen's Club works year-round to bring hunters quality safe hunting areas for their enjoyment. They sponsor outings, philanthropic and civic events, as well as high school and graduate school scholarships. The Club is an organization of volunteers working to preserve our hunting heritage.
