Preseason action wrapped up for the Cougar tennis team with a loss but they bounced back to win their Trans-Valley League opener.

They hosted Central Catholic on Tuesday, March 9 and lost a 4-3 decision to the visitors.

"Grant Tower (number one boys singles) dropped a three-set match," coach Dan Thompson pointed out. "Our team was able to win three matches with Grant losing, I don't foresee him losing much so that's encouraging."

Ben Wiele won his number two boys singles match in straight sets. Megan McCoid was a 7-5, 6-3 winner at number one girls singles, Kate Thompson suffered a 3-6, 2-6 loss at number two girls singles.

In the mixed doubles, Tiffany McGuire and Andy Ward lost in two, while boys doubles Brian Avila and Dallen Strong also lost in two sets.

The girls doubles pairing of Alicia Amarant and Brittany Rigg came away with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Friday, the team traveled to Patterson to face the Tigers in league action and won the match, 5-2.

"We were victorious," said Thompson. "So we were 3-2 in preseason and started 1-0 in the TVL."

Tower took an easy 6-0, 6-1 win off the court and Wiele battled back after being down 5-1 in the first set to win 7-5, 6-2.

"It was good for him to come back," noted Thompson.

McCoid dropped her match, losing to a player that Thompson classified as one of the best in the league, falling 2-6, 3-6. Kate Thompson was a 6-0, 6-0 winner in the other girls singles match.

For the girls doubles, Amarant and Rigg were 7-6, 6-4 winners. Kristin Anderson and John-David Brown teamed in mixed doubles and lost in three, falling 3-6 in the first, then rebounding to take the second set in a tiebreaker before losing the third in a tiebreak.

Strong and Ward teamed for the boys doubles and won, 6-2, 6-3.

The team will host Hughson today, March 17 at 3:30 p.m., moving the match up from its previously scheduled date of Friday, March 19.
