Fighting her way through a crowd, Escalon's Amanda Moreno came away with a third place finish - and a berth in the state track and field meet - with a strong effort in the 320 meters at the Sac-Joaquin Section Meet on Friday.

Finishing up her race just before 8 p.m. Friday, coach Rick Heflin said the conditions were tough but Moreno grabbed that all-important third place slot. Only the top three finishers in the race move on to the state competition.

"It was a tough race, the wind was really bad," Heflin said of the conditions for the two-mile event on Friday at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento. "Going into the first turn, she was second to last, got jammed up, but she fought through everybody and came in third."

Moreno finished the race in 10:55, off her best time but good enough to move on.

"She's got another week to race," said a happy coach Heflin, noting that making it to the state meet was the goal all along.

Moreno will return to Hughes Stadium for the state meet on Saturday, June 5.

Competing in the discus for Escalon was Jake Brown, who threw a 136-0 in the section meet.

"It was a few feet off his personal record of last week, but he did good," noted Heflin.

Shane Brookshire, who went to the section meet as an alternate in the 1600 meters, did not have the chance to take the track, all qualifiers from the subsections turning out for the Friday section meet.
