Tennis team sections against Liberty Ranch on Wednesday, May 1 saw the host Escalon Cougars defeat the visitors by a final of 7-2.

In boys singles, number one seed Wyatt McCune battled tough but fell by a 6-4, 1-6, 4-6 decision and at number two, Chaz Cisneros took an 0-6, 3-6 defeat.

Girls singles number one Mya Beary won over her opponent 6-0, 6-2 and number two Mikayla Schut was a 6-1, 6-1 winner.

All the doubles teams played to victories for the Cougars on the afternoon.

They included boys doubles number one Jack Fitzgerald and Eli Lattig 6-0, 6-0; number two Evan Shafter and Dylan Criteser 6-4, 3-6, 7-6; girls doubles number one Elizabeth Shelley and Ella Adams 6-2, 3-6, 6-2; number two Madelyn Page and Madison Faria 6-0, 6-4; and mixed doubles Kara Kennedy and Trent Berchtold 6-2, 7-6.

The win put Escalon into the team section semifinals, played on the road at Lindhurst on Monday, May 6, past sports press time for The Times.

“On Thursday and Friday, May 2 and 3 this past week the individual section players Mya Beary, Mikayla Schut, Elizabeth Shelley and Wyatt McCune got the chance to play and be the best of the best,” said coach Jackey Blakeley.

Beary and Schut both qualified for singles and played hard but came up short of the section title.

“Elizabeth Shelley and Wyatt McCune played mixed doubles, and going undefeated in individual sections on Thursday and Friday, they are our very own first place section champions!” Blakeley said excitedly. “They have brought the title home. So very proud of all of my players and blessed to have the team and support we had this year.”

A win Monday at the semifinals would put Escalon – as a team – into the section championships on Wednesday, May 8.
