Winter Sports Season Starts With Scrimmage Action

Basketball, soccer and wrestling are all coming up on the sports schedule for Escalon High School athletes, as teams transition from fall to winter sports action.

The boys basketball program returns all three head coaches, Martin Louro at the varsity level, Nate Bartelink for the JV boys and David Anderson for freshmen. All teams are scheduled for scrimmage action at Escalon on Saturday, Nov. 25 and the varsity will see its first action in the Foundation Game on Monday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m., hosting Central Catholic.

The teams will then travel to Bret Harte for non-league action on Tuesday, Nov. 28. Plenty of tournament play is also on the schedule. Trans-Valley League play doesn’t start until after the first of the year, with the Cougars hosting Riverbank to kick off the TVL campaign on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

For the girls basketball program, Joseph Dalpogetti will coach the varsity squad and Robbie Leal will be the JV coach. The girls will head to Ripon for a day of scrimmages on Saturday, Nov. 25 and the varsity will take on Central Catholic in the Foundation game on Monday, Nov. 27 at home in a 6 p.m. tip off.

The girls, JV and varsity, will also host the annual Escalon Tournament from Wednesday, Nov. 29 through Friday, Dec. 1, welcoming multiple teams to the EHS gyms.

Like the boys, league action starts in January, with the girls traveling to Riverbank on Jan. 3 for their opener.

Wrestling once again has head coach Derek Scott at the helm and the first action will see some wrestlers heading to the Novice Tournament at Calaveras on Saturday, Dec. 2 while the varsity goes to the McNair Tournament the same day.

The first home action for the Cougars will be on Saturday, Dec. 16 when the JV Mel Focha Tournament brings in multiple competitors.

Boys soccer returns to the pitch on Monday, Nov. 27 as the JV and varsity squads host Linden with a 3:30 p.m. start time. They host Argonaut, also at 3:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Paul Silva returns to coach the varsity with Paulo Rodriguez coaching the JV boys. League play starts with a game at Riverbank on Monday, Jan. 8.

Both head coaches return for the girls soccer program as well, with Jamie Humrichouse Peoples leading the varsity, Jennifer Schmidt at the JV level. The girls will travel to Linden on Monday, Nov. 27 and to Argonaut on Wednesday, Nov. 29, with a 4 p.m. start time for the JV at both sites, the varsity taking the field at 6 p.m. at Linden, 5:30 p.m. at Argonaut.

Escalon will host Riverbank to start TVL play on Monday, Jan. 8 at 3:30 p.m.
