Escalon’s lengthy run in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 volleyball playoffs came to an end on the road.

The varsity Lady Cougars fell in a 3-1 final to the number two seed, Bret Harte, in action on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Escalon had gone into the contest as the number 11 seed, coming off back-to-back road victories in the opening rounds of the 2017 playoffs against Bear River and Calaveras. They finally met their match in the semifinals, unable to get past the Lady Bullfrogs.

The night started out on a positive note as the visiting Lady Cougars won 25-15 but Bret Harte adjusted and then battled their way through to the win. Escalon fell in the next three, 21-25, 20-25, 20-25.

On the other side of the Division 4 bracket, top seed Hilmar rolled through the playoffs, putting away No. 4 Union Mine 3-0 in the semifinals and then also taking down Bret Harte in the Section title match by a 3-0 final on Saturday, Nov. 11. Hilmar won both the Trans-Valley League title and the Section crown; Escalon finished third in the TVL and made it all the way to the Section semifinals. They also qualified for the NorCal Tournament, said head coach Teresa Williamson.

Their first round game in that tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 15 and the squad will continue to get on the bus, traveling to Justin Siena in Napa for a 7 p.m. start in the D5 state tourney.
