Wet weather continued to hamper soccer teams taking the field for Escalon, though they did get all scheduled contests in during the week.

For the varsity boys, they hammered Modesto Christian by a 10-0 final in Escalon during a Jan. 16 contest.

“It was 6-0 at half,” head coach Paul Silva said. “Andrew Benitez had three goals.”

The rest of the scoring was spread around, with goals from Daniel Suarez, Armando Gonzalez, Chris Gallo, Luis Mendez, Alan Moreno and Daniel Galvan on a penalty kick. Mendez, who had two saves in goal in the first half, played the field in the second and notched a goal. Gallo had an assist and Ismael Gonzalez had two saves in goal in the second half.

“Wednesday at Hughson, it was very windy, the rain was coming down, we agreed to shorten the halves by five minutes,” Silva explained. “It was 8-0 at halftime and we just didn’t play the second half.”

Hughson opted out of the second half, Escalon taking the 8-0 win in just 35 minutes of play.

“There was a lot of standing water on the field,” noted Silva.

Guillermo Alvarez had three goals and two assists, Benitez had two goals and two assists, Hector Rodriguez had two goals and an assist. Armando Gonzalez had a goal and Chris Gallo an assist. Ismael Gonzalez had one save.

JV BOYS

Only one game for the young Cougars this week, as MC does not field a JV team. The Cougars did go on the road for the game at Hughson on Jan. 18 and, they too, took an 8-0 win in just one half of play, the second half called off due to weather.

“It was really rainy,” agreed coach Polo Rodriguez. “Gustavo Hernandez scored five goals for us.”

Adding one goal apiece in the victory were Jose Mendez, Moises Grajeda and Ricky Erazo, while Mendez and Ryan Alpizar each had an assist.

VARSITY GIRLS

Escalon defeated Modesto Christian in Jan. 16 action by a 5-2 final.

“Morgan Dominguez has two goals and an assist,” said coach Jamie Peoples. “Mya Beary had a goal and an assist, Aylin Rodriguez had a goal, Madison Kindberg had an assist, Angelica Fernandez had a goal and an assist.”

Leticia Gutierrez had four saves.

Taking on Hughson on a wet, sloppy and very cold Wednesday – moving the contest to the JV field – the host Lady Cougars came up short in a 4-2 loss.

“We gave up two penalty kicks,” the coach noted of putting themselves in a tough spot.

Scoring for Escalon were Dominguez and Fernandez, with Beary notching an assist. Gutierrez had seven saves.

“The weather was miserable and it was cold,” Peoples said, hoping for some better weather and playing conditions in the second half of league action.

The JV girls did not have any matches this past week, with neither MC nor Hughson having JV teams.
