Starting out their week with a loss on the road, the varsity Cougars boys basketball team rebounded with a strong effort on the road the next day, getting a win.

They were 57-47 losers at Bret Harte on Wednesday, Dec. 2, playing to an early lead but unable to hang on for the win.

Escalon had a 13-11 lead after one and extended that to a 28-20 advantage by halftime against the Bulfrogs. But a 19-10 Bret Harte run in the third made it a tight contest, 39-38, after three and the host team doubled up Escalon 18-9 over the final quarter to take the win.

Regrouping for a Thursday, Dec. 3 trip to nearby Oakdale, the visitors enjoyed a 9-1 scoring edge in the first, keeping the host Mustangs to a single point from the free throw line in the opening quarter. An 18-13 edge in the second gave Escalon a 27-14 cushion at the half and they stayed steady in the second half, putting in 17 points in the third and the same in the fourth to pull away. Oakdale matched them point for point in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late by the Mustangs.

This week, the varsity boys were scheduled to host Calaveras in non-league play on Tuesday, Dec. 8, after The Times went to press and then head to the Buhach Colony-Atwater Tournament later in the week.
