Playing tough for three quarters, the fourth and final quarter was not kind to Escalon’s JV basketball boys.

They saw host Bret Harte go on a 19-0 run over the last eight minutes of the game on Dec. 2, ultimately taking a 58-36 loss.

“I was pretty satisfied with the first three quarters,” agreed JV coach Nate Bartelink. “We had a 16-15 lead after one quarter and we were tied, 27-27 at half.”

Bret Harte was a few points better in the third quarter, holding a 39-36 lead entering the fourth quarter.

“Everything went wrong in that fourth quarter that could go wrong,” Bartelink pointed out. “We had turnovers right and left, we couldn’t get stops on defense. The kids played hard but they learned it will take four good quarters to win.”

Estephan Salcedo had 14 points and five rebounds to pace the JV effort. Steven Grossi had an outstanding game as well, pouring in 11 points and Elliott Mello came off the bench to provide some energy and chipped in with four points.

The boys were scheduled to play a home game on Tuesday, Dec. 8 after The Times went to press, then go to the Buhach Colony-Atwater Tournament Thursday through Saturday. Their schedule includes games against Atwater on Thursday, Buhach Colony on Friday and Delhi on Saturday.

“We don’t get too many practices,” Bartelink noted. “We’ll have to learn on the fly in these games.”
