With basketball playoffs in the rearview mirror and just one more event for wrestling, teams are gearing up for the Spring Sports season at Escalon High School.

A busy season, the spring schedule includes baseball, softball, track and field, boys golf, girls soccer and co-ed tennis. Some teams have already gotten started with preseason matches and the coaching corps is hard at work as well.

Baseball sees Greg Largent return as the varsity head coach and Ken Baptista back for another season as junior varsity head coach. Both teams will be in action on the home field hosting Linden on Wednesday, March 9.

Softball coaches remain the same, with Art Brooks leading the varsity girls, Malinda Walker coaching the JV girls. The teams are busy this week in the Rainbow Classic at nearby Rainbow Fields and they will be back home on Tuesday, March 8 hosting Manteca.

Roger Beeman will be head coach for track and field with several assistants helping out during the campaign, the athletes traveling this week to Oakdale for a practice meet on Thursday, March 3. Currently, no home meets are scheduled for the Cougars, due to track conditions.

Rusty Fachner will return to the links to coach the varsity boys golf team, with Jerry Emery serving as his assistant coach as well as leading the JV boys. The varsity was slated to play Orestimba in their first match of the season on Thursday, March 1 after The Times went to press. Oakdale Golf and Country Club is the home course. The JV team is scheduled to travel to Jack Tone to face off with Ripon today, Wednesday, March 2.

On the soccer field, Jamie Humrichouse Peoples returns to lead the varsity girls and Jennifer Schmidt is back as head coach for the JV girls. The girls are scheduled to host Bret Harte today, Wednesday, March 2 at 4 p.m.

Tennis will see the return of head coach Staci (Gentry) Diaz, traveling on Friday, March 4 for the all day Riverbank Doubles Tournament. They were also slated to host Ripon Christian on Monday, Feb. 29 and play at Calaveras on Tuesday, March 1, both after sports press time for The Times.
